Almost every government exam and job notification sets a minimum and maximum age, measured not as on today's date but "as on" a specific cutoff date printed in that year's notification — commonly the last date of application, January 1st of the recruitment year, or August 1st of the recruitment year, depending on the exam. Getting this wrong in either direction can make you ineligible even if your age looks fine by casual counting, because the calculation is done in exact years, months, and days from your date of birth to that cutoff date. Age relaxation for reserved categories
Most government exams grant age relaxation — extra years added to the maximum age limit — for candidates from categories such as SC/ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), persons with disabilities (PwD), ex-servicemen, and government employees, and sometimes additional relaxation for specific circumstances like widowed, divorced, or judicially separated women. The number of years relaxed, and which categories qualify, is not standard across exams — it is set independently in each exam's own notification and can also differ for different posts within the same exam.
